No fewer than five persons died yesterday following the collapse of a three storey building located at Sameck, along Old Express by Ariaria international Market in Aba.
The building which was reportedly forty years old, started manifesting signs of weariness two months ago but was ignored by the tenants.
According to eyewitnesses, the Landlady came repeatedly to warn the tenants of a revelation she had about the collapse of the building but they continued to treat the warning with levity until Tuesday at about 5pm when the building sank an inch and collapsed.
Emergency response from Aba North to the deployment of a caterpillar to clear the debris of the building in order to recover dead bodies trapped in the rubbles.
Meanwhile, the Head of Operations, Nigeria Red Cross Society Abia state chapter, Chris Okite who led the emergency response team described the incident as unfortunate and warned building contractors to follow building plans in order to forestall the incident of building collapse.
Also speaking the Member Representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency who was at the scene of the incident to see things for himself, urged the family of the deceased to bear their lost with fortitude.
Correspondent Ifeanyi Igwe reports that the dead bodies have been deposited in the mortuary.
