August 20, 2023

Nigerian representatives in the CAF Champions League are gearing up for this weekend’s preliminary rounds kick-off as hostilities take centre-stage across the various centres on the continent.

Bracing for the imminent clashes across the expanse of the continent, the focus sharpens on the two Nigerian representatives – Enyimba, the reigning NPFL champions, and Remo Stars, the league’s runners-up.

The People’s Elephants have already etched their names in history as two-time CAF Champions League victors. In contrast, Remo Stars are poised to make their debut on this grand stage, having previously graced the CAF Confederation Cup on three occasions.

In the first round of the CAF Champions League, Enyimba faces Libya’s Ahli Benghazi. Under the helm of Finidi George, the squad journeys to foreign soil for the opening leg on this Sunday. The showdown’s momentum shifts to Aba a week later for the reverse fixture. A tantalizing prospect awaits the winner of this clash, as they stand to face the victor between Cameroon’s Coton Sport Garoua and Cote d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosa in the next round.

Meanwhile, Remo Stars, will be facing Ghana Premier League champions, Medeama FC, in their own tie on Sunday (today). Interestingly, both teams are debutants in the tournament, which makes it exciting to look forward to.

Medeama are hosting the first leg, while the second leg will be held in Ikenne, Ogun State. The winner of the tie will square up against Horoya FC of Guinea for a place in the group stage.

Daniel Ogunmodede’s side will be ready to showcase their skills and resilience on the road, aiming to return home with a favourable result to build upon in the second leg.

Medeama SC captain Vincent Atingah Addae says the team is battle ready for the encounter against Remo.

Atingah stated that the team is focused on the task ahead and hope to secure a convincing victory.

“Well, our preparations have been good and with the support of the technical men, we’re good to go,” he told a press conference.

“We just have to keep it short and simple, we are hoping for a good convincing win.”
