Democratic Republic of Congo announced a coalition government

August 27, 2019

The Democratic Republic of Congo has announced a coalition government, seven months after the inauguration of President Félix Tshisekedi.

Mr Tshisekedi, son of the late veteran opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi, won a bitterly contested election in December, marking the first peaceful transition of power since DR Congo gained independence from Belgium in 1960.

Since coming to power, President Tshisekedi has agreed to work with the party of former President Joseph Kabila.

Meanwhile, a planned court meeting debating whether Gabon’s President Ali Bongo was in a fit state to govern after suffering a stroke in 2018 has not gone ahead.

It quotes lawyer Anges Kevin Nzigou as saying all hearings have been postponed until next Monday because the number of judges are insufficient.

The petition at the Court of Appeal was brought by 10 members of Gabon’s political opposition, civil society and trade union movement. They want President Bongo to undergo a medical evaluation.

The 60-year-old made his first public appearance earlier this month since returning to the country in March from a period of convalesce in Morocco.
