CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nation, Nigeria clash with Ghana

By magic

May 11, 2021

Nigeria and Ghana have been pitted together in the first round of qualifying for the 2022 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nation, rekindling a decades-long rivalry between the West African nations.

The draws for the 2022 AWCON to be held in Morroco next summer were held yesterday in Cairo.

The Super Falcons will host the Black Queens before travelling the short distance to Ghana in the first round of qualifying games scheduled for 7-15 June 2021.

The match will likely prove a test of new Falcon boss Randy Waldrum credentials as he attempts to lead the women’s national team to a first major tournament.

Nigeria, defending champions and record winner of Africa’s showpiece women’s football tournament and three of their triumphs have come at the expense of the Black Stars in 1998, 2002 and 2006, all to the Super Falcons.

The winner between the Falcons and the Black Queens will take on the winner of the Niger/Cote d’Ivoire fixture in the second and final round of qualifying slated for October 2021.

In the draw for the U20 FIFA Women’s World Cup which will be hosted by Costa Rica next year, the Falconets have been drawn bye into round two, where they will play the winner of the fixture between Equatorial Guinea and Central Africa Republic.

The second round games will hold 23-25 September and 7-9 October, with the third round matches in December this year.
