Akwa Ibom State government arrests over 180 persons for gender-based violence

Akwa Ibom State government has apprehended over 180 persons who are involved in gender-based violence in the state, adding that 18 persons have already been convicted.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Agriculture, Dr Glory Edet stated this in Uyo during a press conference to commemorate 2019 sixteen days of activism for the elimination of violence against women.

She called for the passage of the Violence Against Persons (prohibited) bill into law in the State.

Dr Edet noted that the state government has taken over the care of some of the children whose parents have been convicted, in the case of those who had no one to care for them.

Edet who is Dean of Commissioners and Special Advisers to the Governor vowed that no circumstance nor consideration would prevent the state government from prosecuting sexual offenders against children and gender-based violence perpetrators.

She said the intent was to end violence against women by 2030.
