Residents of Aba have called on the Abia state Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA, to employ more hands and provide waste bins on streets and roadsides in order to ensure good waste management around the city.
Correspondent, Ifeanyi Igwe who spoke with some residents observed that Aba with an estimated population of over one million people generates over ten million tons of waste material monthly.
Some of these waste material end in waterways, streets and empty lands around the city.
The residents however called on ASEPA to educate the masses on the need to dispose their waste properly.
Meanwhile, the Deputy General Manager ASEPA, Chief Ronald Nwakanma has condemned the attitude of some residents who have no knowledge of proper waste management and revealed that plans were underway to ensure that waste disposal comes with rewards.
Our correspondent reports that badly disposed wastes favour the breeding of some disease vectors and pathogens, destroy the landscape and reduce the aesthetic value of the environment.
