Some residents of Umuahia in Abia on Thursday called for the extension of collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVC), barely 24 hours to the Feb. 8 deadline by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The residents said the extension would enable more eligible registrants to get their PVCs.
A survey by Magic FM’s Nnenna Gabriel at the INEC office in Umuahia North Local Government Area showed a massive crowd who besieged the premises as at 1pm.
The registrants who queued according to their wards, were pushing and shoving one another for collection of their PVCs.
Some of the residents, who were unable to collect theirs after searching for several minutes expressed disappointment as they were told by the INEC officials to come back again the next day.
In his reaction, Mr Bamidele Oyetunji, Public Relations Officer, INEC, Abia, said the influx was expected, as the commission had put in a lot of effort to sensitize the people.
He, however, said that the extension was not within the powers of the state, but that of the national headquarters.
