The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Abia State chapter, has given the State Government a 21-day Ultimatum to clear all outstanding salary arrears owed doctors working in Abia State University Teaching Hospital, ABSUTH, and the Hospital Management Board, HMB.
NMA also threatened to embark on a total and indefinite statewide strike that would involve doctors in Federal, State and Private employ, if the state government fails to clear the arrears at the expiration of the 21 days.
In a communique signed by NMA Chairman and the Secretary respectively, Dr. Isaiah Abali and Dr. Daniel Ekeleme, at the end of State Officers Committee, SOC, of NMA meeting, held at NMA’s Secretariat, and issued to Magic FM, the association noted that in her courtesy visit to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on August, 2022, it explained to him the untold hardship doctors in ABSUTH and HMB were passing through.
According to the release, doctors working in HMB were owed 12 months’ salary arrears, while Resident Doctors in ABSUTH were owed 20 months and other cadre of Doctors in ABSUTH 24months.
The NMA in the state says it is hopeful that the state would do the needful in finding an acceptable solution before the expiration of the ultimatum to avoid a total collapse of the entire health institution in the state.
