APGA candidate for Aba central state constituency Hon. Mathew okorie has called on legislators to remember the reason why they where elected to represent their constituencies in the legislative arm of the government And not some group of individuals. He stressed that the failure of most legislators to work for the benefits of their people is either that they are novice of their duties or intentionally do not want to offset the burden of their people.
Further more, he blamed the inefficient of Executive arm of the government in implementing the bills as approved to them to the legislators. He reminded them that part of the duties of the legislators is to checkmate the activities of the executive arm of the government which is why there is house chairman and deputy in finance, works, transportation, budget etc. All these are to ensure that money approved to the Executive are used accordingly to the benefits of Abians.
His statement reads:
I’m here to remind Abia state legislators that good representation is the major aim why the people of your constituencies voted for you among different choices and aspirant presented to them during election.
House members are not selected but elected to represent the core interests of their constituents and various local government that made up their constituencies and must consider their needs as his or her first priority why serving. irrespective of your political party your duties are to citizens of Abians in welfare and representation.
One of the things I have find out is that most of these politicians does not know the duties attached to their offices. In regards to this, I am here to remind the legislators some of the things expected of them while serving.
CRITICAL EVALUATION OF APPROPRIATION BILLS:
It is no longer news that most of the budget in the appropriation bill do not see the light of the day Because they are bills that does not have significant existence. Therefore, The legislators must ensure that estimates are critically analysed for effective resources distribution.
SERVE AS A WATCHDOG TO THE ACTIVITIES OF THE EXECUTIVE.
They must also consider it important that the money budgeted is wisely utilized judiciously as approved without sentiment. The house committee should always follow up bills approved to ensure that resources distributed for such bills are used to the interest of Abians.
Most times, money approved for a certain project will not be used for that project which always affect the citizens.
PROPER EVALUATION OF PROPOSES LEGISLATION BEFORE APPROVAL.
The laws must also be practically implementable over a long period of time for effective results to be recorded.
DEFENDING CONSTITUENCY INTEREST
Due to their knowledge of services offered by various levels of government and community groups, members are uniquely qualified to help constituents resolve their problems and not certain group of people only.
Members need excellent interpersonal skills to understand and defend their constituents’ interests.
They may need the skills of a social worker to effectively solve constituents pressing personal needs or problems.
Members often act as a mediator to resolve a clash of interests within their constituencies or between their constituents and other groups.
They may have to advocate on behalf of the community or explain the provisions and effects of proposed legislation.
They also engage in oversight functions for their constituencies.
Every member maintains at least one constituency office that they work from when the Assembly or its committees are not in session. It was on this functions and legislative right of members that the indigents of Aba central have not been able to benefit from the both previous and current legislators because either the went there as novice or they just decide not to do the needful for their people.
Finally, I have come that my people might have new face of politicking in Aba central by changing the old narratives of the previous occupants of that seat.
